There is a tradition in Wales that about the year 1170, Prince Madoc ab Owain Gwynedd sailed across the Atlantic and landed on the shores of what is now North America.
Wales, a country on the western side of the British mainland, which together with Ireland, Scotland and England make up the British Isles.
Trying to unravel the facts from the fictions that accrete around tales such as this is no easy task. The story was embellished in the Elizabethan period for political purposes.
By collecting all the pieces of evidence and putting them together, we hope that a clearer picture will eventually emerge.
